When and how should ground cherries be harvested?

Ground cherries are usually harvested when their fruits have fully matured and naturally drop from the plant. Look for ripe fruits that have fallen to the ground and developed their characteristic papery husks. The fruit inside should have reached its mature color and feel reasonably firm. Collect fallen fruits regularly to prevent them from becoming damaged or spoiled. Avoid eating unripe green fruits because they may not have developed their desirable flavor. After harvesting, remove damaged fruits and keep good-quality ground cherries in a cool, dry place or refrigerate them for longer storage.
